Harmful Carpet Cleansers

The majority of industrial carpet cleansers contain harmful chemicals. And even mild exposure to these chemicals can cause respiratory, throat, nose, and eye irritation, and headaches; some are even known to cause damage to the nervous system. And while having your carpets cleaned with these substances is typically safe under cold, well ventilated conditions, it is not always a guarantee.

It is true that there exist many chemical cleansers that area completely safe under prolonged exposure, but keeping track of thousands of common cleaning solutions is a daunting task. In fact, even with some common household carpet cleaning substances, prolonged exposure can cause various health related issues.

Common Hazardous Materials

Here are just a few examples of common chemicals found in conventional carpet cleaning solutions that you should avoid if at all possible:

Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (aka 2-butoxyethanol): This chemical does not typically present a great health risk, but when exposed to heat, it can release toxic fumes that are harmful to breathe and cause damage to the nervous system.

Perchloroethylene (aka "perc"): An additive that causes dizziness, fatigue and nausea if ingested or inhaled. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also claims it causes kidney and liver damage.

Naphthalene - A solvent produced from coal tar. According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, it is toxic to the human central nervous system and a possible carcinogen.
